RE: Too many activities

Being a teacher, I can tell you that there are advantages and disadvantages to both.

Adavantages:
1) Socialization- your children learn how to socialize properly with peers and society, including working in a group toward one goal.

2) Time Management- a skill that they will need in the future (middle/high/college/life)

3) Opportunities- being involved gives them option to dream, like we all did and to work toward a goal of their own.

4) Development of Talents- we are all given strengths and weaknesses. Giving children an option to explore more than one activity gives them the agency to develop their talents. If your son is destined to be a pro-baseball player, yet was never given that time to develop his talent, then he is just hidding it away and will lose it.

Disadvantages
1) School Work Suffering- a child should never have so many activities that his/her school work suffers. After all, we will all need a diploma soon to hold a job.

2) Exhaustion- if a child is involved in TOO much than he/she may become warn down.

In Summation:

Encouragement is a good thing to show your children. Encouraging them to be involved and express their inner self works wonderfully for their self-esteem and character. Encouragement to get good grades and rest does as well.

Limit your child's activities to two to three. Allow them to use their agency to choose what they wish to do. But also remind them that if they get "overwelmed" or "bored" with one thing, that there is nothing that says they can't try something else. Also make a pact to keep up those grades, etc.....

Keeping them a little busy will keep them out of places that you do not want them to be. It also puts them around good/wholesome individuals.

This is just some observation I have had as a teacher and a once "busy and active" child.....

I'm in the news!

Hi Everyone!

So last week I went to visit the children at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center with my friends at Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana.

We had so much fun taking goodies around to the children and raising awareness for national Child Abuse Prevention month.

Check out the video:

Hope you're enjoying your April events!

Take care,

RE: R-Rated Movies

I would agree that it is important for parents to do this. To extend that though what I don't get is why I see kids going to R rated movies without parents. I am sorry but if it is R rated I would rather that they asked them for an ID or you don't see it. I know alot of people don't agree with that but that is just what I think that the theatres should be doing in the first place.

RE: Sex education

Focus on the Family has excellent books on this topic. They start with "boys and girls are different" for young kids, which talks about body parts but that's it, then works up to a adolescent view. It's factual and as brief as possible, and an excellent way to introduce children to the birds and the bees. Keep in mind it is a Christian book series.
